5 Ways to Address Men’s Incontinence with Dignity and Comfort

Being diagnosed with incontinence can feel like the end of the world. However, unknown to many, the condition is manageable, sometimes even treatable, depending on the cause.

In this post, we’ll walk you through the top five ways to address men’s incontinence with dignity and comfort.

1. Invest In Adult Diapers

Adult diapers have become synonymous with incontinence. Also known as incontinence briefs, these adult-sized diapers allow your dear ones to stay dry even after having multiple bladder movements. They’re a reliable way to address the embarrassment that incontinence patients are often subjected to after having bathroom accidents in public.

But adult diapers aren’t made equal. When shopping for the best incontinence briefs for a male relative, it’s important to consider diapers specifically designed for men.

Adult diapers for men are characterized by the frontal location of their core absorbency layer. That’s in contrast to women’s diapers, which usually have the absorbency material concentrated on their undersides.

However, this rule only applies to diapers designed for urinary incontinence. Male briefs meant to combat urinary and bowel incontinence usually have the core absorbency material running from the diaper’s backside to the front part.

Below are additional considerations while shopping for the best male incontinence brief;

  • Thickness of the absorbency material – Thicker materials correspond with severe incontinence, and vice versa.
  • Diaper size – Know the waist and thigh measurements of the intended wearer before hitting the stores
  • Chemical ingredients – Avoid diapers formulated with skin irritants, such as phthalates and formaldehyde

2. Understand the Type of Incontinence Involved

As hinted, incontinence falls into two broad categories – urinary/bladder and fecal/bowel incontinence. Each type presents unique challenges to both the patients and caregivers.

Urinary incontinence is generally easier and cheaper to manage than bowel incontinence. In the latter case, you might consider disposable rather than reusable adult diapers.

Although they can be costly in the long run, disposable briefs are easier to handle. The fact that you don’t have to wash these diapers after each bowel movement significantly minimizes the risks of contamination.

The type of incontinence your male family member suffers from may also be viewed in terms of the cause.

It’s important to emphasize that incontinence is a symptom rather than a disease. The condition may be due to various factors, including old age, degenerative diseases, dementia, and reduced physical mobility.

While seniors with dementia may require lifelong caregiving to manage their incontinence problems, those with temporary mobility issues will only need interim support.

3. Recommend Healthy Diets

Mindful dieting is critical to incontinence management. The kinds of foods and fluids your loved ones consume can aid or exacerbate their incontinence condition.

The general rule is to avoid diuretic substances. Granted, diuresis may provide several benefits to the body. But for people with incontinence, increased urine production is a nightmare.

Discuss with the patient the significance of shunning caffeinated, alcoholic, and acidic compounds. All three can stimulate excess urine production and irritate the bladder.

However, avoiding irritants doesn’t mean reducing fluid intake. On the contrary, drinking plenty of water and healthy fluids like smoothies can improve incontinence by minimizing bladder irritation.

Just be sure to emphasize moderation as a principal rule.

As for bowel incontinence, incorporate more fiber-rich foods. Fiber supports bowel incontinence by increasing stool bulkiness and consistency, which is key in preventing constipation.

4. Establish a Proper Toileting Routine

Establishing a proper toileting routine can be effective while managing incontinence at home. If diligently executed, it can significantly reduce overreliance on incontinence aids like adult diapers and penile sheaths.

First, carefully study your loved one’s toileting patterns.

Most people visit the bathroom the first thing in the morning and the last thing before retiring to bed. But it’s the patterns in between that you need to take note of.

Next, suggest visiting the toilet at times that correspond with the person’s patterns. This can go a long way in minimizing bathroom accidents.

It’s also important to understand the patient’s bathroom challenges. For reduced mobility, you may consider installing a ramp by the toilet door. Wall-mounted grab bars and raised toilet seats can also make a difference for physically challenged incontinence patients.

Finally, once the person is inside the bathroom, make them comfortable by walking away or turning on the music or a tap.

5. Insist On Safe Skincare Products

Having to deal with an overactive bladder or bowel is daunting enough for incontinence patients. Therefore, subjecting them to skin irritation will only compound their suffering.

Admittedly, you’ll need to stock up on incontinence products to help your male family member brave the condition with confidence. Those range from sanitary wipes to protective gloves, adult diapers, odor eliminators, and moisturizers.

Moisturizers are particularly recommended as they bolster the skin’s barrier, preserving its pH.

However, insist on products containing natural ingredients specially formulated for sensitive skin.

Don’t just look out for the words “hypoallergenic” or “all-natural” in incontinence products. Instead, research each chemical ingredient independently to vouch for its dermatological safety.

If you’re in doubt, consult a licensed dermatologist for expert recommendations.

Wrap Up

Following the above tips can make incontinence manageable and improve the quality of life for your dear ones.

Remember to work consensually with the victim before introducing them to major lifestyle adjustments. This can bolster their self-esteem by making them feel truly loved despite their condition. More importantly, it increases their receptiveness to the suggested interventions.
